Study 1
Effects of Mouth Taping on Snoring & Mild Sleep Apnea in Mouth Breathers
This study examined the effects of mouth taping in adult mouth breathers with mild obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
After one week of sleeping with the mouth taped, the Apnea–Hypopnea Index (AHI) and Snoring Index were each reduced by approximately 50%.
Additionally, the Oxygen Desaturation Index (ODI) and lowest oxygen saturation (O₂) levels showed significant improvement.A possible mechanism behind these effects is enforced nasal breathing, which increases pharyngeal stability and reduces airway resistance.

Study 2
Effects of Mouth Taping on Sleep Quality & Daytime Sleepiness in OSA Patients Using CPAP
This randomized crossover study (30+30 days) evaluated mouth taping in patients using CPAP with mouth breathing. With mouth tape, CPAP usage duration and adherence increased significantly. In addition, daytime sleepiness (ESS), nocturnal awakenings, snoring VAS, and oral/pharyngeal dryness improved. A possible mechanism is the reduction of oral leaks, leading to more stable pressure delivery, fewer micro-arousals, and therefore more restorative sleep.

Study 3
(Mouth tape equivalent) in mild OSA: reduced daytime sleepiness
This prospective study (n = 30) used a porous oral patch (mouth closure) overnight.
Results: The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) decreased from 8.1 to 5.2 (significant), AHI improved from 12.0 to 7.8 events/hour, with a marked reduction in snoring.
These findings indicate more restorative sleep with fewer micro-arousals.
